Final Count Results – Effect on Automatic Recounts

As you know, Final Count figures were released late on Saturday evening, April 16 following the close of the Final Count.

In my Communique on Thursday, April 14, I provided a brief overview of the recount process (based on Section 155 of the Election Act 1996), describing two circumstances in which a request for a recount by a candidate or business manager would be granted automatically. These are:

  • If the two candidates with the most votes have the same number of votes following the Final Count;
  • If, after the Final Count, the margin of victory of the candidate declared elected is less than the total number of all unopened ballot envelopes, rejected ballots and ballots objected to.

I am writing this morning to advise that the Final Count has shown that no constituencies meet the requirements that entitle an automatic recount.

For purposes of vocabulary, please note that we have now issued “final count” results (from the Final Count concluded on Saturday, April 16), publishing them alongside “preliminary count” results (from election night on Monday, April 4) at http://results.elections.sk.ca. The Statement of Votes, scheduled for publication in Fall 2016, will contain “official” results and offer more comprehensive snapshot figures from the 28th Provincial Election, including poll-by-poll results.

I would be happy to discuss Final Count figures for any specific constituencies with Chief Official Agents.

Voting Week is October 22 to 28. No voting on October 27.Learn more.
