January 19, 2015 – Representatives from Saskatchewan’s Registered Political Parties met with Elections Saskatchewan’s senior management team to debrief the November 13, 2014 by-election in the constituency of Lloydminster.
“This by-election was a significant electoral event in our province in 2014,” says Dr. Michael Boda, Saskatchewan’s Chief Electoral Officer and head of Elections Saskatchewan. “It’s important to follow events such as this by meeting with our political parties in order to capture what went well and what improvements can be made prior to the 28th General Election.”
This meeting was the latest outreach from Elections Saskatchewan to all six Registered Political Parties in Saskatchewan. Previous meetings include:
“Parties are a key stakeholder in Saskatchewan’s democratic system, and it is a priority of Elections Saskatchewan to meet regularly with all six parties. This meeting was productive and valuable to us in many ways.”
The meeting covered all aspects of the by-election including the enumeration process, staffing of election worker positions, and the resources provided to the Lloydminster Returning Office from Elections Saskatchewan’s head office.
The meeting concluded with a presentation from Dr. Boda on the next steps with respects to the new election legislation that requires Elections Saskatchewan to build and maintain a permanent voter registry for Saskatchewan’s voters.
The next meeting with the parties is in June 2015 and will be a comprehensive meeting that will update the party representatives on a year’s worth of activities and on Elections Saskatchewan’s preparedness for the scheduled provincial general election, which by law is set for November 2, 2015. If there is a conflict with a federal election at that time, the alternative date for Saskatchewan’s election is April 4, 2016.
Elections Saskatchewan is the province’s independent, impartial, professional election management body. Given a mandate from the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly, it organizes, manages and oversees provincial electoral events.
