Deputy Returning Officers at technology-enabled voting locations, DRO (Tech), work to verify that registered electors have the proper identification, register voters, and provide ballots to eligible voters. The DRO (Tech) uses laptop computers and other technology to perform tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up voting station and test the laptop and handheld scanners
  • Verify voters’ identification and entitlement to vote
  • Find voter records using an internet-based application and recording when voters have voted
  • Register and update voter records in the application as necessary
  • Administer voter declarations and vouching declarations
  • Instruct voters on how to mark their ballot
  • Complete all tasks manually using paper forms and lists, if required
  • Work with the Supervisory Deputy Returning Officer to resolve issues
  • Shut down the voting station, pack all technology and other poll materials to be sent to the returning office

Specific Skills:

  • Have a strong familiarity with computer systems and related technologies, including:
    • Proficiency working in Microsoft Windows
    • Aptitude working with Internet-based software and applications
  • Comfortable with taking technical troubleshooting advice over the telephone
  • Able to follow instructions and checklists and complete repetitive tasks
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with the public
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Able to work for long stretches of time (up to 13 hours)
