Working in technology-enabled voting locations, the Tabulator Officers (TO) oversee the tabulator machine and ballot box in the voting location. The TO sets up the machine, assists voters with inserting their ballot, and troubleshoots any problems with the technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete testing of the programming of the tabulator before voting starts to ensure it is reading ballots as intended
  • Set-up, test, and validate the tabulator machine prior to the start of voting
  • Assist voters with casting their ballot
  • Manage machine notifications and inform voters of any issues with how they have marked their ballot
  • Troubleshoot problems with the machine, and inform SDRO of problems that arise
  • Generate tabulation results and print result tape on the last day of voting
  • Securing the tabulator, ballot box and other material between voting days, as required
  • Shut down tabulator station and account for all materials at the end of voting

Specific Skills:

  • Comfortable with technology and managing technical issues
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with the public
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfortable with taking technical troubleshooting advice over the telephone
  • Able to follow instructions and checklists and complete repetitive tasks
  • Ability to use good judgement and tact when dealing with voters
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written
  • Able to stand and work for long stretches of time (up to 13 hours)
  • Able to learn quickly, follow directions, and complete repetitive tasks
